Roles of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council Seats

All Seats

  • Ability and willingness to communicate with the spectrum of users or stakeholders the seat represents
  • nderstanding the links between the constituents and/or the uses the seat represents and the sanctuary resources
  • Opportunity to chair or participate in advisory council working groups or subcommittees

Education – (K-12, home school, charter schools)

  • Affiliation with elementary, junior high, or high school educational institutions or organizations in the sanctuary region
  • Direct experience with Great Lakes education programs

Higher Education

  • Affiliation with higher education institutions or organizations in the sanctuary region
  • Direct experience with Great Lakes education programs

Tourism/Recreation

  • Familiarity and affiliation with the travel/tourism industry in communities near the sanctuary
  • Affiliation with organizations representing recreational users (including but not limited to recreational boating, kayaking, and swimming) within the sanctuary region
  • Experience and/or knowledge regarding recreational uses of and activities within the sanctuary region

Business/Economic Development

  • Familiarity and affiliation with business/economic development organizations, small business owners, or industry in communities near the sanctuary
  • Understanding of the links between local business, sanctuary resources, and human activities

Maritime Industry/Business

  • Familiarity and affiliation with Great Lakes related business and industries

Diving (including snorkeling)

  • Affiliation with individual divers, diving organizations, dive charters, and other dive businesses within the sanctuary region
  • Breadth of experience and knowledge regarding diving law, safety, and practices within the sanctuary region

Fishing (recreational, charter and/or commercial)

  • Affiliation with individual fishers, fishing organizations, charters and/or businesses within the sanctuary region
  • Breadth of experience and knowledge regarding fisheries law, policies, and practices within the sanctuary region

Citizen-at-Large

  • Familiarity with communities close to the sanctuary
  • Experience and/or knowledge regarding Great Lakes maritime heritage, particularly underwater cultural resource in the sanctuary region
  • Experience and/or knowledge regarding public uses and activities within the sanctuary region
  • Freedom to express views and cast votes without consideration of any expectations held by an employer or other organization with which the member is affiliated
