Possible Shipwrecks
The waters of Thunder Bay shelter countless mysteries, including the remains of many vessels that have yet to be located. Waves and ice may have broken up many of these lost ships over the years, but others still await discovery on the bottom of Lake Huron. According to historical records such as newspaper articles and official government documents, the vessels listed below may have been lost in the vicinity of Thunder Bay.
For details about most of these vessels and the circumstances surrounding their loss, please refer to the comprehensive online database that has been compiled by shipwreck historian David Swayze. His database, the Great Lakes Shipwreck File, documents total losses of Great Lakes vessels from 1679 to 1998. The database can be accessed at http://greatlakeshistory.homestead.com/home.html. If you click on this link, the database should open in a new browser window so that you can view the two websites at the same time.
