uri visit

During the week of August 26, 2007, Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary hosted three scientists from the University of Rhode Island, two archaeologists and a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) specialist. During their visit they helped Sanctuary staff assemble and install a new Klein 3000 side-scan sonar system on the Huron Explorer. Several exciting targets were revealed that will add to our knowledge of the historic marine landscape. They also continued to refine the Sanctuary?Äôs archaeological database that will greatly aid in researching Northwest Lake Huron?Äôs cultural heritage. In addition to archaeological work, they helped Sanctuary staff create and visualize possibilities for new interpretive and interactive displays for the Marine Heritage Center. They also delivered Geospatial data to support the management of the sanctuary and surrounding waters and a new collection of LIDAR images was compiled and processed that will open new possibilities for large-scale remote sensing research.Rod Mather
