Great Lakes Shipwrecks

Great Lakes Shipwreck File - A searchable database of several thousand shipwrecks in the Great Lakes, created by David Swayze, shipwreck historian and author.

Great Lakes Shipwreck Research - A wealth of shipwreck and diving information, including a newsgroup and links to many other sites.

Michigan Shipwrecks - Information provided by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality about the state's underwater preserves, the laws governing the state's bottomlands, and underwater salvage permits.

Wisconsin's Great Lakes Shipwrecks - Wisconsin Sea Grant's shipwreck page. Check out Notes From the Field, which follows an underwater archaeological study.

Walt Hoagman's Shipwreck Page- Walt Hoagmen is the Michigan State University Sea Grant Extension agent of Northeast District, MSUE and Iosco County. This page contains good information on shipwrecks in the Thunder Bay region.

State of Michigan Shipwreck Information Page- Discusses shipwreck and underwater cultural resources and the state law that governs them. The site also provides good information on diver ethics and the Michigan Underwater Preserve Council.

Maritime Museums & Historical Societies

Association for Great Lakes Maritime History - An international organization of museums, historical societies, libraries, archives, and individuals interested in preserving Great Lakes maritime history.

Dossin Great Lakes Museum - Located on Detroit's Belle Isle.

Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum - Located at Whitefish Point, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Features the famous wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Historical Collections of the Great Lakes - Bowling Green State University's collection of public materials documenting the Great Lakes region and connecting waterways.

Marine Historical Society of Detroit - A non-profit organization dedicated to the history of the Great Lakes and its maritime heritage.

Marine Museum of the Great Lakes - Located in Kingston, Ontario.

The Mariner's Museum - Home of the Monitor collection, including research material and artifacts recovered from the ship. Located in Newport News, Virginia.

Shipwrecks in other National Marine Sanctuaries

Florida Keys NMS Shipwreck Trail - This page describes the history of the nine ships that form this interpretive shipwreck trail, complete with wreck maps. Also read NOAA's feature story about the trail.

Monitor National Marine Sanctuary - The only other NMS focused solely on a shipwreck. Check out the mission logs for the August 1999 expedition to the Monitor and learn about the latest preservation efforts. You can also download the September 1999 issue of the NOAA Report for an article about the August expedition.

Shipwrecks of the Channel Islands NMS - Learn about the search for the Watson A. West. From there, access more links to the sanctuary's shipwrecks and follow the progress of a modern-day salvage effort.
